Pastor's Corner: September 1

Posted on September 01, 2024 in: Pastor's Corner

In his final homily a few weeks ago, Deacon McCarroll asked the question: “Was it worth it?” He pointed that question in more than one direction, but it was rooted in the Eucharistic Revival, an American project that tried to counter indifference to the Eucharist and a time for conferences and talks, processions and days of adoration, a renewed focus on how we offer and receive this Sacrament. Of course, we’ve had the added blessings of a summer when we reflect on Jesus’ Bread of Life discourse from John’s gospel. And now all that’s over, we’re tempted to go back to “normal,” to do things we’d been doing them.

But, the Eucharistic Revival urges us to carry its lessons forward. Have we neglected Mass and communion? Is it time to bring our families back to church each Sunday? Can we find the time to participate in Mass an additional time during the week? Can we stop by a church for a prayer before the tabernacle? What about adoration in our own parish—Monday evenings from 5:30 to 7 p.m.? (Yes, confessions happen at the same time, but you don’t have to go to confession if you’re in the building. It’s completely OK to spend that quiet time in prayer before the Eucharist is exposed on the altar.) Could we invite someone to come to Mass with us? The Catholic friend or family member who’s stopped going. The neighbor who doesn’t seem to connect with any faith. (Remember, singing “All Are Welcome” doesn’t matter too much if we don’t actually invite and welcome folks to our community.) Will it all be worth it? Yes, if we continue to celebrate God’s gift, if we continue to live our faith, if we continue to boldly invite others on the road to God’s kingdom.
