The letter sits in front of me on my desk. The letter from Bishop Bambera that begins with the words: “In response to the needs of the faithful of the Diocese of Scranton, I am appointing you Pastor, Saint Ann Parish, Williamsport…[you] will continue to serve as Pastor, Saint Boniface Parish, Williamsport.”
It sounds pretty tidy. A pastor and a parochial vicar (Fr. Dias received a similar letter the same day) were assigned to two separate parishes. What does that mean in practical terms? How do our lives as St. Ann and St. Boniface Parishes change? How much will things remain the same? Is it just about the priests? Will the only challenge be the Mass schedule?
Let’s think about the word “linkage.” We link arms to connect people. Links make up a chain. Linking involves sharing.
Clearly, both parishes share clergy. Expect to see one or the other of us at any given time, in any given space. Neither of us will be exclusively the “St Ann priest” or the “St Boniface priest.” Remember, because I have a diocesan position—Regional Vicar—at times I’ll be called on to visit another parish. Again, we share with our diocesan sisters and brothers.
A few things we won’t share as linked parishes. Money stays separate. Neither parish’s assets can be used to shore up the other’s deficits. (As it happens, both parishes remain financially stable.)
Some things we can opt to share. Parish Pastoral Councils sometimes, but not always, combine. Ministries, programs, and organizations can, but don’t have to, join forces. But, through all this, let’s remember who we all are.
St. Paul tells us we’re the Body of Christ, every member concerned for the good of the other. Jesus prays at the Last Supper that his disciples “be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you.” Linkage challenges us to live out that sacred vision.
So, part of the linking belongs to our daily actions. When you’re invited to be part of something by that so-called “other” parish, show up! When you see something going on to another parish that might be spiritually helpful to you, join in! When the call comes to volunteer, be willing to help wherever help is needed! When you’re looking to go to Mass or make confession, check the amazing schedule that our County parishes offer!
