Especially at this time of the year, stress and anxiety may run high for you or someone you love, and St. Dymphna can be a source of inspiration and devotion. People invoke her name and intercession for friends and family in need of healing from mental illness, as well as the stresses and anxieties of day-to-day living.
Born in Ireland in the 7th century of a pagan king and devout Christian, Dymphna’s mother died when she was a young girl. Her father became insane at the loss of his wife and was consumed with finding another woman like her. Dymphna fled to Belgium with her pastor and others to escape her father. He eventually found her and when she refused to marry him, she was martyred by his sword at the age of 15.
There are several Catholic prayers in honor of St. Dymphna. Here is one of many to consider.
Prayer in honor of St. Dymphna
Good Saint Dymphna, great wonder-worker in every affliction of mind and body, I humbly implore your powerful intercession with Jesus through Mary, the Health of the Sick, in my present need. (Mention it.) Saint Dymphna, martyr of purity, patroness of those who suffer with nervous and mental afflictions, beloved child of Jesus and Mary, pray to Them for me and obtain my request.
(Pray one Our Father, one Hail Mary and one Glory Be.)
Saint Dymphna, Virgin and Martyr, pray for us.
