Entries for September 2022
Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) is cancelled this weekend. We need volunteers for presentations and supervision of our children. This ministry explains to our children in "kids’ language" the readings of the Mass for that Sunday. Children are given activities to take home that they can share with their family. These activities reinforce the message and theme of the readings. All adults, college students and high school students are welcome to help. Contact Barb Rizzo at 570-398-0602 or brizzo55@verizon.net. You will love this ministry!

In the entry areas of our two churches, near where you pick up your bulletin, there’s also another pile of papers—the 2022-2023 budget.
I encourage you to take a good look at our financial projection. There’s good news and there’s challenges in those lines and numbers. The best news in these budgets is those lines and numbers have a context. They tell the story of how faith communities work and sacrifice for the sake of the gospel. They become a springboard for planning with our Pastoral and Finance Councils. Because the issues contained in our pa...

Chalk it up to beginner’s luck if you like. I’m talking about praying for good weather for the carnival. You told me that was my job. I prayed and we had three beautiful nights. I’m not sure it’ll work that way every year—it could just be beginner’s luck. But, what’s not beginner’s luck is the work you all did to make the carnival a success. You planned, you worked, you cooked, you supported, you cleaned up—and all that made more a great carnival. Thank you for your work around these three days! Thank you for the im...

The Diocesan Annual Appeal is the Diocese of Scranton’s single most important fundraising initiative. Poverty, hunger, and homelessness remain serious challenges in our community. Funds raised also help with vocations and priestly life, Catholic communications, Catholic education, and parish and spiritual life. Look for more information about the appeal in the upcoming weeks in our weekly bulletin and on our website. We ask you to look deeply within your heart to contribute to the appeal in order to bring the gift of hope to our brothers and sisters in need.

A few years ago, a book came out with the title Nudging Conversions. The author certainly had the verb right! Most of us end up being “nudged” in whatever conversions happen in our lives—embracing the gospel, taking our faith seriously, opening up to the possibilities of vocation. Let’s think about the places in our lives where God might be nudging us to conversion—and the ways we can be his instrument in nudging others. It’s time to start up RCIA again—the process by which we welcome new folks to the Catholic faith. Maybe you&rsquo...

Now that it’s Labor Day weekend, let me talk about some of the work I do. You might have noticed in the official announcement of my appointment as your pastor, that I would continue as Episcopal Vicar for this Western Region of the Diocese. What’s that about? Frankly, it means I have another job! The Diocese pays part of my salary because I do that other job— good news to you. But, it means that sometimes I need to represent the Bishop to install a pastor (like last Sunday when I installed Fr. Carpenter at Resurrection) or help with the complicated busines...
