Pastor's Corner: March 17

Pastor's Corner: March 17
I’m not trying to rush us through these last weeks of Lent. But, let’s take a look at these days—including a glance at some additions and tweaks to Holy Week. Passiontide. We seem to have forgotten this word, but the scriptures and prayers of the final two weeks of Lent continue to focus on the Lord’s approach to his Passion. With that in mind, we offer Tenebrae this Sunday (March 17) afternoon at 4 pm at St Boniface: A Liturgy of scripture and song that draws us into the darkness of these days, a darkness that ultimately leads to the bright light...

CRS Rice Bowl Support

Posted on March 04, 2024 in: Social Concerns

CRS Rice Bowl Support
The foundation of the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) non-profit program is faith. They reach out in faith to the people they serve, trying to build a more just and peaceful world. They move forward and act on this mission as it is not enough to desire to serve, but they work with others to bring about real change. There are results to their ministry and we can be part of this by continuing to add to the RICE BOWL and designate a family amount to be given. Thank you for your continued support.

LENT on FORMED

Posted on February 15, 2024 in: General News

LENT on FORMED
Download Interactive Calendar from FORMED Lent is a sacred season of prayer and devotion in the Christian calendar. For Roman Catholics, the forty days of Lent are a time of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving to prepare for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. This period of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving fosters spiritual growth by holistically deepening our relationship with God. Through prayer, Catholics draw closer to God. By fasting, Catholics detach from worldly comforts and redirect our focus toward the Lord. Refraining from certain foods or activit...

Pastor's Corner: March 26
Yes, it looks like Lent is winding down. 40 days always seems daunting when we set out on Ash Wednesday, doesn’t it? With all our promises and hopes to fast and prayer and live charitably! Next week will be Palm Sunday. Just a reminder of how we’ll celebrate that Sunday this year. We’re resuming the practice of a Palm Sunday procession at the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Masses. At St. Lawrence we’ll gather outside the main porch to bless the branches and then we’ll all walk into church together for the Mass. At St. Boniface, meet us in the gym for th...

Pastor's Corner: March 19
In today’s gospel Jesus tells us he is “the light of the world.” As we tell his story through the liturgical year, we use that image of light to great advantage. Think of the Advent wreath and how its light grows each week. Think also about where our Lent leads us: to the evening celebration of Holy Thursday and the night Mass of the Easter Vigil. The darkness of his Passion will be overcome by the light of his Resurrection! We also have a tradition of praying Tenebrae, a liturgy that runs opposite from that Advent wreath. We begin with candles blazing ...

Pastor's Corner: February 26
40 days Jesus stays in the desert, keeping a fast. What does it mean to fast? How would we explain this to someone outside the faith? Many times, we’ve had to explain those ashes on our foreheads to someone else at school or the workplace. Many times, people have wondered why we skip the meat we’d like to opt for the fish on a Friday night. Sometimes we compare a fast to a diet. But, there’s a difference. Dieting is pretty much about us—our health, our self-image, the way we’d like to others to see us. But, fasting tells us to give up something...

Fasting. Prayer. Almsgiving. In this Wednesday’s — yes, it’s Ash Wednesday already! — gospel we’ll hear Jesus highlight these traditional Jewish—and later, Christian signs of repentance. Holy Week is unique in its rich Christian symbolism that streams from Holy Scripture and the earliest traditions of the Catholic/Orthodox believers. Take full advantage of it! After Holy Thursday's reliving of the Last Supper, stay for adoration. The Blessed Sacrament will be reserved in the lounge. Until 11 p.m. we will remain open for silent prayer. Also, think of remaining after the 1 p.m. Good Friday service. Privately, you could use the time in prayer until 3 p.m... when He died on the cross.
